1 One Student One Issue Two Sides Language Arts Persuasive Campaign

2 Unit Summary In this unit students will create two effective “advertising campaigns” for each side of one issue. Students will discover that understanding the opposing side to an issue will aide in their argument. Students will write a persuasive essay for each side that is of published quality. In addition, students will create a power point presentation, a poster, and one additional element (song, button, t-shirt, etc) for each side.

3 CFQs Essential Questions: How do you effectively persuade someone? Why do we need to have the skill of persuasion? What can we learn from looking at the world through “ another person’s eyes”?

4 Unit Questions: How do you identify an effective persuasive strategy? How do others attempt to persuade you? Why do others attempt to persuade you? CFQs

5 Content Questions: What are the types of persuasive strategies? Why is it important to develop a solid thesis? How does the quality of presentation affect the persuasion?

6 Developing a Lifelong Skill By understanding another’s point of view when persuading, students discover how to strengthen their own argument and gain empathy towards others. By gaining the ability to identify persuasive strategies, students will become lifelong critical thinkers.

7 Identifying Student Needs Before beginning project: Bridge the gap between ideas and product by identifying any mental roadblocks that might arise when arguing for a different point of view. Differentiate Instruction according to students’ abilities (adding more visual examples of persuasion, etc) Focusing on connecting persuasive skills to real life situations so students will see the value in the ability to persuade others and identify how they are persuaded.

8 Student Unit Goals Students will develop bank of persuasive strategies that students can manipulate independently both in writing and “real world” situations. Students will be able to identify persuasive strategies. Students will have more confidence when expressing their viewpoints. Students will be able to critically evaluate another’s viewpoint. Students will be able to produce a piece of work that is of high presentation quality while utilizing technology. Students will learn time management skills
