Dialogue format reminders What do you need to put around dialogue? What do you need to do when you switch speakers? Do you always need to include “______ said?” If you do use “_____ said,” what do you need to put before between the quote and the “_____ said” part?

Developing Dialogue Practice Pick one of the “I Dare You” practice activities on page 128 to do. Criteria: Correct dialogue conventions use develops sense of character and plot event dialogue is not just a normal conversation with dull filler dialogue accurately and effectively represents the voice of the characters speaking

Writing Groups for Feedback In groups of 3-4 (split gender groups) Have two people read the dialogue as if two characters. Writer needs to listen for how the dialogue sounds. Purpose of having other people read: Sometimes writers don't hear their own work, so they don't know whether or not it actually sounds good. Even if the writer reads it aloud, they sometimes self-correct and don't catch awkward phrasing or structure.
