Density – Of a block Given a block of wood, find its mass and calculate its volume. Volume equals length X width X height. Use a ruler and measure in centimeters. Example: Length 10.0 cm X Width 5.0 cm X Height 0.50 cm = Volume 25 cm3 To find mass, use the balance. Mass in grams g Density equals Mass/Volume g / 25 cm3 = g/cm3

Density Of a Liquid To find the density of a liquid:
Place small empty graduated cylinder on the balance and zero it (Tare). Add 10 mls of water and record volume in notebook. Record the mass in your notebook from the balance. In your notebook write: Mass of Liquid grams Volume of Liquid 10.0 milliliters Density = Mass/Volume Density of above = 9.90 g/ 10.0 ml or g/ml

Density of an Irregular Object
To find the density of an irregular object: Use a graduated cylinder with about 20 grams of water, place on a balance and tare. Record the volume of water before and after you place the object in the cylinder. Record the mass. Volume before the mass is added, ml Volume after the mass is added, ml Subtract the two liquids and find total volume Total Volume = 24.9 ml – 20.0 ml = 4.9 ml Record Mass 12.5 g. Density = Mass/Volume = 12.5 g/ 4.9 ml = 2.6 g/ml
