Density

Different substances have different densities. The density of a material does not depend on the size or amount of the substance you have. Density is the amount of mass in a given volume. Formula for density: Density = Mass/Volume or D=M/V Units for density are g/cm 3 or g/ml Density of pure water is 1 g/ml

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. A Triple Beam Balance is the instrument used to measure mass. Units for mass are grams (g) Weight is different than mass. Weight is the measure of how much gravity is pulling on a mass. Weight varies depending on location.

Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. A Graduated Cylinder is the instrument used to measure liquid volume. Volume of a solid is measured using the formula: Volume = Length x Width x Height Units for Volume are: milliliters (ml) or cubic centimeters (cm 3 ) 1ml = 1 cm 3

Finding the Volume of Irregular Shaped Objects The Displacement Method is used to find the volume of an irregular shaped object. (Initial volume of water + object) – (initial volume of water) = volume of object
