1 Measuring Length

2 SI Measurement System International System of Units
Developed out of a need for a global measurement system.

3 Advantages of the SI System
Helps all scientists share and compare their observations and results. Based on the number 10, which is easy to use in calculations.

4 SI Measurement System

5 Length Length is the long dimension of any object. (the distance between its ends)

6 Tool  meterstick Base Unit Meter (m)

7 To Be Continued… Now: Let’s Measure!!!

8 Measuring Volume

9 Volume The amount of space an object occupies.

10 Tool  graduated cylinder Base Unit Liter (L)
1 liter = 1,000 Milliliters

11 Measuring Volume Irregular Objects Water Displacement
Put the object in a graduated cylinder containing water and measure the change in volume of the water.

12 Measuring Volume Rectangular Objects Volume = Length x Width x Height
Measured in m3 or cm3

13 To Be Continued… Now: Let’s Measure!!!

14 Measuring Mass

15 Mass The measurement of how much matter an object contains.
Tool  triple beam balance Base Unit gram (g) 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams

16

17 Weight The measurement of the force of gravity on mass.

18

19 Weight or Mass? An object’s weight will change if you move it from Earth to the moon or to other planets, but its mass will stay the same.

20 Measuring Density The measurement of how much mass is contained in a given volume. Which means how closely packed or crowded an object is. Most of the time solids are more dense than liquids.

21

22 Which box is more dense?

23 Measuring Density Which tool(s) do you think would be used to measure density?

24 Calculating Density Density = Mass/Volume Units: g/cm3 or g/ml

25 Density Facts Less dense objects will “float” on top of more dense objects. For example, oil will float on water. Oil is less dense than water.

26

27

28 Density Facts The density of a substance is the same for all samples of that substance. For example, at 4oC pure water has a density of 1 g/cm3

29 Density Facts For example, all samples of pure gold have a density of 19.3 g/cm3. Fools gold has a density of 5.0 g/cm3

30 Temperature A measure of how hot (or cold) something is.
Tool  thermometer Base Unit Celsius (oC)
