Unit 1 Vocabulary Energy and Density Absorption Dynamic Equilibrium Reflection Re-radiation Radiative Balance Change Density Displacement Inference Mass Volume Conduction Convection Radiation Rate of Change
3
Absorption: The ability of a material or object to take in heat energy being radiated from a heat source. Rate of absorption is determined by the color and texture of the object absorbing the radiation. Dynamic Equilibrium: Overall balance, even when things change. Reflection: The ability of an object to reflect heat energy back into the atmosphere. (Generally light/smooth surfaces). Re-Radiation: Sending heat energy out into the atmosphere after absorbing and processing it. (Generally dark/rough surfaces)
4
Radiative Balance: Incoming energy = outgoing energy. Change: Altering a system Density: The ratio of mass to volume Displacement: The difference in water level when measuring the volume of an irregular object. Inference: Figure something out using known data. Mass: The amount of stuff in an object. Volume: The amount of space an object takes up.
5
Conduction: The process of transferring energy by physical contact. Convection: Transferring energy by circulation caused by differences in density. Radiation: Transferring energy by waves. Short waves are absorbed, long waves are re-radiated. Rate-of-Change: Measures the change in field value over a given amount of time.
