In the figure to the left the blue dots are the matter (particles/atoms/molecules) which will add to the mass of the object. The amount of space the box takes up would be its volume. DENSITY A)The amount of matter (particles/atoms/molecules) in a given space or volume or B)The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance
3
Copper vs. Aluminum 1.Copper particles (atoms) are smaller than aluminum atoms. 2. More copper particles (atoms) can fit in the cube. 3. Copper particles (atoms) are also heavier than aluminum atoms. Copper is MORE dense
4
Calculating Density Finding Density (D) 1. Measure objects mass (M) 2. Measure the object's volume (V) a) ruler for regular shapes b) water displacement for irregular shapes 3. Divide mass over volume Formula: D=M V Why do we do this?? Because density is measuring how much matter (particles) which adds to the mass of an object is in a given space/volume!! Units Mass is measured in grams (g) Volume is measured in mL or cm 3 Density is measured in?? g/cm 3 (solids) g/ml (liquids)
6
Why…. g / cm 3 How much mass per (is in) A certain volume
7
THE DENSITY TRIANGLE D=M V M= D x V V= M D D=M V M= D x V V= M D
