FFCUL, PORTUGALBologna 9 -11 Oct 2006 NEAREST WP1 – Tsunami Source Identification Description: 1.(...) full description and interpretation of the faults and fault kinematics as whole (…) such as i) the production of a 3D map of the structural framework, ii) complete model of fault kinematics, iii) rates of fault activity and iv) correlation of faults and earthquakes. 2.(…) it is needed a full geomorphologic map in order to select the best place to locate the early warning system prototype.

FFCUL, PORTUGALBologna 9 -11 Oct 2006 NEAREST WP1 – Tsunami Source Identification Partners: ISMAR-BO, FFCUL, CSIC, UBO, INGV, UGR, CNRST SUB-TASKS: 1.1 Review of sources of tectonic origin: Mapping of tectonic structures using all available MCS and bathymetry data. 1.2 Review of sources due to slope instability: Produce map of landslides using existent SWIM multibeam bathymetry and respective ages where cores already exist.. 1.3 Synthesis on tsunamigenic sources. Site selection for deployment of seafloor observatory: Select best area and survey it using high resolution deep towed side scan sonar

FFCUL, PORTUGALBologna 9 -11 Oct 2006 NEAREST 1.1 Review of sources of tectonic origin A.A 3-D geometrical model of the active faults will be produced using the available MCS lines and multi-beam bathymetry. B.Kinematics of the faults (…) based on the seismic lines, SWIM multibeam bathymetry and earthquake focal mechanisms data sets C.Estimation of the rates of activity for each fault during Cenozoic times will be calculated based on recent seismo-stratigraphic models for the Cenozoic in the study area D.Parametric tables for each fault will be produced (size, orientation, maximum predictable earthquake). E.Experimental and numerical modelling using analogue materials and appropriate software to simulate the mapped structures and interpret them. WP1 – Tsunami Source Identification

FFCUL, PORTUGALBologna 9 -11 Oct 2006 NEAREST 1.2 Review of sources due to slope instabilities A.identify mass wasting-related morphologies in the Gulf of Cadiz, based on swath bathymetry and acoustic backscatter data already acquired and compiled within SWIM, using Fledermaus visualisation software; B.Establish the characteristics of the landslides (dimensions, type of flow, etc). C.Determine slope stability and age of the slides, from sediment cores (gravity cores and multicores) already acquired; D.Create a database of the Gulf of Cadiz submarine slides, including information on water depth, headscarp (height, width, and length), slope, total surface, volume, run-out length, age. WP1 – Tsunami Source Identification

FFCUL, PORTUGALBologna 9 -11 Oct 2006 NEAREST A.high resolution acoustic surveys shall be performed: CHIRP and/or TOPAS profiles and deep towed side scan sonar in order to evaluate the deployment area at the scale of the size of the prototype-system. B.Synthesis of tsunamigenic sources. C.Final selection of site of deployment of the seafloor platform WP1 – Tsunami Source Identification 1.3 Synthesis and selection of the site for the deployment of a seafloor platform based on the GEOSTAR technology.
