The Anatomy of a Lesson APK (Activate Prior Knowledge) TIP (Teacher Input) SAP (Student Active Participation) ISS (Identifying Student Success)
4
APK Activating Prior Knowledge is important because it helps students make connections to the new information they will be learning. The emotional hook and objective of the lesson are stated during APK. APK should take approximately 20% of the lesson.
5
TIP The teacher models and provides instruction related to the objective during Teacher Input. It is important that the teacher model the metacognitive process of why it is important to learn the skill and how it will help the student be a better reader. TIP is approximately 20% of the lesson.
6
SAP Learning occurs when the students are actively participating in the lesson through guided and independent practice. Students are expected to give support for their answers or explain the process they used to obtain the answer. SAP should be approximately 45% of the lesson.
7
ISS Identifying student success helps “cement” the learning for the student as it relates to the objective. It is the final check by the teacher to determine whether each student was 75- 95% successful learning the objective of the lesson. ISS is approximately 15% of the lesson.
