Lesson outcomes All will make 2 pinch pots and attach them together accurately and cut a hole using the correct method. Most will improve the pot shape by attaching a further pinch pot. Most will alter the shape by attaching a handle or making a lid. Some will start adding relief.
5
Clay Rules 1.Do not mess about or throw clay. 2.Listen carefully to instructions. 3.Do not touch another persons work. 4.Do not run around the classroom. 5.Do not wash your hands until you have completely cleaned your area.

Health and safety Silicosis is a form of lung disease caused by breathing in clay dust. Consider your own and others health when using clay so these instructions MUST be followed: 1.Wipe your tables with a damp cloth so the dust is soaked up. 2.Don’t clap your hands together as you will force the dust to circulate into the air you are breathing. 3.Don’t shake the clay dust from your paper into the bin pour it carefully into your slurry pot so it can be recycled. Clay dust particles in the air Clay particles inside the lungs

Making a ‘pinch pot’ 5) Repeat for 2 nd thumb pot 1) Take you ball of clay and divide into 2 equal parts 2) Pat out the clay to get rid of any air bubbles – Don’t roll it on your hands 3) Use your thumb to press the centre of the ball and rotate it around your hand 4) Make sure the ‘walls’ of your pot are equal thickness (1cm thick)
8
Joining your pinch pot 6) Get a clay tool and start scratching the surface by drawing a criss cross design 7) Use the slip (clay glue) to wet the surface where you have the criss cross design. 8) Take the other pinch pot and place it evenly on top. 9) Use the clay tool to drag the clay near the join up and down to create a join 10) Now smooth the surface 11) Cut the top carefully to reveal the opening

Adding a Handle or Lid 12) To make a handle roll out the clay to make a large thick sausage shape. 13) Use the knife to create a criss-cross design on the 2 ends and use the clay slip to attach it to your pot. 14) Now smooth the surface along the edge to attach your relief shape to your pot. 15) To make a lid roll a ball of clay, use your thumb to press the centre of the ball and rotate it around your hand 16) Use the knife to create a criss-cross design on the lid and lid handle, attach with the clay slip. 17) Use a small piece of clay to smooth the surface along the edges to attach the handle to the lid.
10
Relief and Incising 18) Use 2 pieces of wood to roll your clay ball out in between with the roller. 19) Use the knife to cut out the shape for your relief. 20) Use the knife to create a criss-cross design on your clay pot in the shape of your relief. 21) Use the slip (clay glue) to wet the surface where you have the criss cross design. 22) Now smooth the surface along the edge to attach your relief shape to your pot. 23) Use the knife or clay tools to incise your drawing design.

Cleaning up routine Gather up unused clay and pat into a ball to hand in. Wrap up work in plastic, make sure that it is air tight, label your work (name and class) with masking tape. Hand in work. Use your paper to empty dry bits of clay into the slurry pot or bin. Wipe table down with a damp cloth Put folders in the middle of the table. Wash hands when you have been given permission and use the paper towel you use to dry your hands to wipe the table dry
