4 Absolutism Absolutism is rule by one person. They have complete control over all aspects of a country. The most iconic is Louis XIV, known for his extravagance and Palace of Versailles. Westernization occurred in Russia as they adopt the policies of France and Spain. (Peter the Great) Known to follow Divine Right, king has all power derived from God, and cannot be judged by the people. 28 29 34 35

5 English Civil War Charles I was not following Parliaments orders. Civil War breaks out in 1640, Parliament and Oliver Cromwell leading the army vs. the King and Royal Army. After the English Civil war and a return to absolute rule, the Glorious Revolution occurs, and William and Mary take power. Parliament gains power through the English Bill of Rights 30 31 32 33 36

6 Enlightenment Period This is a period of intellectualism and abstract thought. John Locke is known for his influence on the Declaration of Independence “L, L, and P” Hobbes is the opposite, supporting absolutism after the chaos of the English Civil War. – Nasty, Brutish, Short. Rousseau is known for his “Social Contract” advocating freedom where men are born into chains. 39 44 39

7 Scientific Revolution Galileo would improve the telescope to further support the “heliocentric theory” Kepler would add to Copernicus’ theory by discovering planetary motion. Isaac Newton would examine the laws of gravity. William Harvey is known for his work in blood circulation. (Add) 40 41 47 45
