It shall not be used for any other purpose, nor disclosed or retransferred to any other entity or government without prior written permission of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). JEM MS MT INC1920 31407 Marangoni Surface (MS) Maintenance Inc19/20 Instructor: Yuki Kawai Takuya Takami (yuki.kawai@jamss.co.jp) (takami.takuya@jaxa.jp)

Training Purposes Only JEM MS MT INC1920 31407 JMU-081200 (Ver. 1.0) 2  Overview of MS Maintenance  Key Points during MS Maintenance  MS Maintenance Operations Identify three maintenance operations. Explain when each maintenance operation is required. Explain what crew must attach to prevent crew contact to sharp edge. Explain the parts where crew must not touch. Perform three maintenance operations according to ODF. Objectives After this lesson the trainee will be able to:

Training Purposes Only JEM MS MT INC1920 31407 JMU-081200 (Ver. 1.0) 4 Install MS into FPEF Exchange MS Cassette Assemble MS -Install MS Cassette to MS Core -Conduct leak check -Install MS Core/Cassette to MS Body Experiment -Form liquid bridge -Generate Marangoni Convection -Observe Marangoni Convection If air tightness is not kept If liquid bridge is collapsed Marangoni Experiment Operational Flow MS Maintenance Airtight O-ring exchange MS Maintenance Overview Cooling disk O-ring and absorbent exchange Cleaning :Crew operation is necessary. There are three maintenance operations. All tasks need crew operations. double airtight O-ring of MS Core and MS Cassette will be exchanged. O-ring of cooling disk and absorbent in MS Core will be exchanged. silicone oil in MS Core will be wiped off, furthermore “Cooling disk O-ring exchange” and “Airtight O-ring exchange” will be conducted. Remove MS from FPEF Disassemble MS When MS Cassette is exchanged

Training Purposes Only JEM MS MT INC1920 31407 JMU-081200 (Ver. 1.0) 5 Cooling disk O-ring and absorbent exchange - Open the MS Core door - Attach MS Heating Disk Cover - Wipe off silicon oil at Cassette inlet - Exchange MS Disk Inner O-ring - Wipe surface of MS Disk Outer O-ring - Exchange MS Absorbent at the back of the cooling disk - Remove MS Heating Disk Cover - Close the MS Core door Cassette inlet MS Disk Outer O-ring MS Disk Inner O-ring MS Absorbent Cooling disk O-ring and absorbent exchange cooling disk MS Core Thermo Couple Sharp edge MS Heating Disk Cover MS Core door

Training Purposes Only JEM MS MT INC1920 31407 JMU-081200 (Ver. 1.0) 6 Airtight O-ring exchange (MS Cassette and MS Core) -Open the MS Core door -Attach MS Heating Disk Cover -Demate connector -Exchange MS Core Inner/Outer O-ring -Mate connector -Remove MS Heating Disk Cover -Close the MS Core door -Exchange MS Cassette O-ring(2) MS Cassette O-ring(2) MS Cassette MS Core Inner O-ring connector Airtight O-ring exchange MS Core MS Core Outer O-ring MS Heating Disk Cover

Training Purposes Only JEM MS MT INC1920 31407 JMU-081200 (Ver. 1.0) 7 - Separate MS Cassette from MS Core - Clean inside of MS Core from cassette side - Blow silicone oil out of a limit switch sensor gap by Finger Pump - Open MS Core door - Clean heating disk and attach MS Heating Disk Cover - Clean inside of MS Core from MS Core door side - Blow silicone oil out of two limit switch sensor gaps - Conduct “Cooling disk O-ring and absorbent exchange” and “Airtight O-ring exchange” - Remove MS Heating Disk Cover and close MS Core door Cleaning MS Core (cassette side)MS Core (MS Core door side) Cleaning cooling disk heating disk There are three limit switch sensors in MS Core to control cooling disk position gap limit switch sensors limit switch sensor

Training Purposes Only JEM MS MT INC1920 31407 JMU-081200 (Ver. 1.0) 8 Key Points during MS maintenance CategoryKey Point Crew Safety- Do NOT touch the edges of the cooling disk or heating disk by hand to prevent crew contact to sharp edge. - Attach MS Heating Disk Cover and MS Cooling Disk cover to prevent crew contact to sharp edge. Time Critical OperationsN/A Dos and Don’ts- Do NOT touch the edges of the cooling disk or heating disk to avoid disk coating comes off for experiment success. - Do NOT touch thermo couples(three) on the cooling disk. - Do NOT touch limit switch sensors to avoid coating comes off. Difficulty in Ops.N/A Possible Mis-Ops.N/A
