Creating Artists of Learning Building the School of the Future

Let’s start off with a couple of questions…

Do our learning organizations meet the needs of a new generation of learners… Sell to the world Buy from the world Work for international companies Manage employees from other cultures and countries Collaborate with people all over the world in joint ventures Compete with people on the other side of the world for jobs and markets The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that today’s learner will have 10-14 jobs … By the age of 38.

Do we know how kids feel about their current learning experiences? 70% of respondents said they were not motivated or inspired to work hard. 2/3 would have worked harder if it was demanded of them. 59 – 65% of respondents missed classed often the year prior to dropping out. 81% of students surveyed believed there should be more opportunities for real-world and experiential learning Today’s average US student has 4 – 5 email addresses 26% of US students access a foreign news service The fastest growing segment of computer users today in the US is 5 – 7 year olds.

How are we doing? Out of 100 9 th grade students… 18 will graduate from college within 6 years…

Do we recognize… We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist... Using technologies that haven’t been invented... in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet. David Warlick – Connect Learning blog

Are we ready for this…

what if…

WOULD WE STILL BUILD….. What if… We understood our customers… We were guaranteed not to fail… We knew exactly what we wanted a learning environment to look like… We had resources, commitment, will, and courage… 9

innovation and business development team Creating a Creative Environment… Bertelsmann Foundation Report: The Impact of Media and Technology in Schools – 2 Groups – Content Area: Civil War – One Group taught using Sage on the Stage methodology – One Group taught using innovative applications of technology and project-based instructional models End of the Study, both groups given identical teacher-constructed tests of their knowledge of the Civil War. Question: Which group did better? 22

innovation and business development team Answer… No significant test differences were found 23

innovation and business development team However… One Year Later – Students in the traditional group could recall almost nothing about the historical content – Students in the traditional group defined history as: “the record of the facts of the past” – Students in the digital group “displayed elaborate concepts and ideas that they had extended to other areas of history” – Students in the digital group defined history as: “a process of interpreting the past from different perspectives” 24

innovation and business development team School of the Future So What Did We Build? A learning environment that is continuous, relevant and adaptive No discrete content classes Flexible schedule and flexible building Culture of professional development 1:1 access Digital resources supported by a connected learning community New hiring practices… New Language… New Expectations… 26

innovation and business development team Success Metrics Educational Score Card Standard State Assessments (3 rd Year) n/a Attendance Graduation Rate n/a Climate Educator Turnover Drop Out Rate Community Engagement 27

innovation and business development team Far from utopia… Inherent Vertical Challenges – Minimal organizational capacity to initiate systemic reform strategies – Minimal organizational capacity and resources to support non-essential programs of which technology is considered in many instances – Prevailing culture of fear of failure. If not permitted to fail, innovation is impossible – Intricacies of political webs embedded deep within institutions that outlive any innovative leadership – Policy and practice that reinforce the status quo – Basic lack of fundamental acumens for all community stakeholders; parents, learners, educators, district leadership – Need for immediate satisfaction/proof of concept/validation of new educational approaches long before they can realistically be expected Microsoft Lessons – We make it too hard – Capture and Analyze the Whole Student – Emphasis on Support 28

innovation and business development team Lessons Learned Be brave, be bold, be thoughtful… Money and technology are great… people are better. It’s more than a professional development plan… it’s creating a culture of professional development. Be comfortable saying “I don’t know” and be self-critical Language matters 29
