Safety comes first! l Always wear safety glasses. l When workig with heated objects, always wear gloves. l No running or horseplay. l Learn to do a job the right way. l Report all injuries to the instructor. l Observe all warning signs or tags.

l Turn off machines when not in use or during repair. l Unless you have been taught to run a maching, don’t use it. l Always use the proper tool for the job. l Avoid wearing loose or overly baggy clothing when working with machinery. l Be aware of people around you at all times. l Use correct shaded lens when welding. l Know where fire escapes and fire estinguishers are.

Oxy-acetylene Safety l When working with a lighted torch, always wear dark goggles to protect your eyes from sparks and intense light. l Wear heat-resistant, nonflammable gloves. l Keep area and clothes free from grease or oil. l Do not oil or grease cylinder screws. l Wear coveralls (avoid loose clothing, trousers with cuffs, and pockets.

l Some metals require you to wear a respirator -galvanized iron, lead, zinc, beryllium, cadmium l Report defective material or tools to instructor l Welding and cutting should be done in well ventilated areas l Use soap and water to check for gas leaks

Cylinder Care l Store or place cylinders in safe places with secure chains around them. l Keep sparks and flames away l Always store tanks with safety caps. l When “cracking the cylinder valve” do not stand in front of the cylinder valve. l When in use, open oxygen cylinder all the way.

l When in use, open acetylene cylinder one and one-half turns. l Do not use cylinders without porper pressure regulators. l Do not use undue force in trying to open or close a cylinder valve.

Hose Care l Oxygen hoses are green, acetylene hoses are red l Oxygen hose fittings have right-hand threads l Acetylene fittings have left-hand threads l Never used damaged hoses. l Do not allow hoses to come in contact with hot metal or where sparks could accumulate

Torch Care and Lighting l Never use a match to light torch. l Do not light your torch from another person’s flame l Always use correct pressures l Be careful when handling a lit torch. Know where other people are and where combustables are.
