2 Mission and Funding Purpose: To provide exceptional engineering education to bright, and enterprising students at little or no cost. Funding: The F. W. Olin Foundation has provided a grant in excess of $400 million. Founding: Chartered in 1997 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

6 Basic Facts Size: Projected total enrollment – 600. Program: Undergraduate engineering. Majors: B.S. in electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering and engineering

8 Basic Facts (cont.) Curriculum: Project-based, team-oriented approach emphasizing business and entrepreneurship, arts and humanities and rigorous technical fundamentals. Facilities: 500,000 square feet of academic, residential and administrative space. Phase 1 – 300,000 square feet completed. Scholarship: All admitted students receive a four- year full-tuition scholarship valued at $120,000.

10 Faculty Number: 21 full-time and 2 academic partners. Gender: 14 men; 9 women. Applicants: Received more than 2,100 resumes. Background: Researchers, artists, writers musicians, inventors and entrepreneurs.

12 Faculty (cont.) Research: Nationally recognized in their fields and will use Olin undergraduates in their research activities. Innovations: No tenure awarded, no academic departments; faculty is multi- disciplinary. Ratio: Currently 3 to 1; anticipated ratio of 10 to 1 at full enrollment of 600 students.

14 Admission Profile Applicants: 1201 applied; 96 were admitted Enrolled: 75 (including 29 Olin Partners, 14 deferred and 32 “true” freshmen) Gender: 38 men and 37 women Geography: 34 states and Costa Rica

16 Admission Profile (cont.) Ethnicity: 23 percent students of color Ave. GPA: 4.4 (weighted on a 4.0 scale) Valedictorians: 20; salutatorians 9 Testing: Middle 50 percent of class scored between 1440 and 1530 on the SAT.

18 Admission Profile (cont.) AP: 41 receive recognition in the Advanced Placement Program as AP Scholars. National Exams: 45 percent were finalists in National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholarships. Leadership: 17 were class presidents; 17 academic team captains; 11 athletic team captains; 9 editors and 50 community service participants.
