BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course FORM COMPLETION

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Verifying and Updating Inventory Data Inspector is responsible for obtaining, verifying and updating inventory data during inspection Check off each inventory item to indicate it was verified Not necessary to change data if measurement is only slightly different Inventory changes are made directly on the inspection form Page 1

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Verifying and Updating Inventory Data Culvert design dimensions are shown on first page of culvert form SPCSP equivalent round should be changed to correct dimensions Used to determine sagging and deflecting measurements If culvert is not deformed, large sagging and deflecting values may indicate wrong design dimensions then use end measurements Page 2

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Verifying and Updating Inventory Data Inventory data is changed by crossing out recorded value and writing in new measurement Update and verify Inventory data on the form Minor changes to things like roadway width are not required Page 3

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Supporting Information Ratings of 4 or less must have an explanation of condition ratings of 3 or less must have a recommendation for action Action may be in the form of: –recommending repairs and maintenance –monitoring on a shorter inspection cycle Photographs, measurements and/or sketches are provided for ratings of 3 or less or any maintenance recommendation regardless of rating Page 4

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion BIM Y/N Inventory Questions Explanation of condition is required when answering YES Exceptions for B inspector are –approach guardrail meeting standards –Longitudinal seams proper lap –Longitudinal seams staggered if NO, provide comments explaining why Page 5

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Significant Changes From Previous Rating Ratings of most elements do not change significantly over an inspection cycle Provide an explanation of condition if rating has changed significantly Required even if rating is 5 or more For example: –treated timber piles rated 8 and 21 months later piles rated 5 why the big change? Page 6

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Significant Changes From Previous Rating Some elements are expected to change significantly over an inspection cycle For example: – timber strip deck rated 8 and 57 months later, rating reduced to 5 –Scour protection rated 7 and after flood reduced to 3 Page 7

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Measurement Based Ratings Record the actual measured values in space provided or in Explanation of Condition Record the location of any measurements in the Explanation of Condition or space provided –5 mm crack in A1 abutment seat –wide longitudinal crack in S1, G3 AZ, 2 legs Page 8

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Previous Comments Comments from previous inspection which no longer apply must be deleted Carry over previous comments if information cannot be confirmed or verified –place brackets around comment or part thereof & add date of last inspection If element cannot be seen or is not accessible to confirm comments or data –Explain why inaccessible or not visible – HWM or LHS data write date in Ex of Cond –Carry over comments in Ex of Cond Page 9

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Previous Comments Types of information retained: –measurements that cannot be verified –previous high water marks –information recorded during particular weather conditions –information recorded during particular season Page 10

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Photographs and Sketches Excellent means of providing supporting information Submit two copies of all photographs with inspection form Mount photographs on separate sheets and provide description next to the photograph Page 11

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Photographs and Sketches Photographs are additional supporting information All ratings of 4 or less must still have an explanation of condition Explanation may refer to a photograph Unacceptable to only write “SEE PHOTO” in the Explanation of Condition area Digital acceptable of quality is comparable Page 12

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Estimating Quantities Inspectors are to estimate quantities for recommended repairs and maintenance May record in Maintenance Inspector Comments (expandable) or on a separate sheet of paper Submit with inspection report Examples: –3 m 3 of class 1M rock riprap –5 timber stripdeck planks, each 75x300x 3 m long Page 13

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Inspection Checks The inspector should do the following checks before leaving the site: –all ratings have been entered »element condition rations »General Condition rating »Estimated Replacement Year –condition ratings appear to be appropriate –ratings are supported by »explanations of condition »sketches »photographs »recommendations for maintenance monitoring other appropriate action –all inventory information has been verified or changes noted –maintenance recommendations are appropriate, and –maintenance recommendations are supported by »an explanation if needed »a list of required maintenance materials showing dimensions and quantities.

BIM Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Technical Standards Branch Class B Bridge Inspection Course Forms Completion Inspection Checks Office follow-up: –Follow up with questions raised during the inspection »appropriate maintenance and timing »monitoring »load restrictions and other signing »notify road authority –Complete the appropriate inventory coding sheet to update the inventory database –mount photos in standard format with appropriate comments ie what & where
