2
Distance versus Displacement A ferry boat captain and a truck driver are asked how far it is from Vectorville to Component Cove.
3
The truck driver's response … 80 km.
4
The ferry boat captain's response … 50 km.
5
Who's right? There is a discrepancy in the accuracy of how far it is from Vectorville to Component Cove. The ferry captain actually has the correct answer. When deciding how far it is from one place to the next, we need to measure directly from point A to point B.
6
Distance versus Displacement The distance between two points is the total "ground" that is covered. This would be how far the truck driver traveled. Displacement is how far it is from point A to point B. This would be how far the ferry boat traveled.
7
Scalar Quantities A scalar quantity has magnitude. Distance is a scalar quantity.
8
Vector Quantities A vector quantity has magnitude and direction. Displacement is a vector quantity.
9
Parts of a vector Tail Head Remember that a vector has magnitude and direction.
