Reliability Study of Power Generation System Utilizing Wind Power Derek H. Geiger DSES-6070 HV5 Term Project 31-March-2008

Power Generation Systems Majority of power generated today provided by conventional energy sources – Coal – Nuclear – Hydro – Fossil Fuels Benefits: Provide reliable source of energy Drawbacks: Except for Hydro, limited supply of resources and create pollution

Alternative Power Generation Systems More and more implementation of alternative power generations systems (10% to 20%) – Solar Power – Wind Power – Fuel Cell Benefits: Clean, unlimited resources Drawbacks: Produce unpredictable time varying power

Reliability Project Objective The goal of the project is to develop a simple reliability model for a power generation system to evaluation the benefits of alternative power sources Model the following: – Reliability of power generation system or ‘network’ provided by a conventional power sources – Reliability of wind farm – Reliability of hybrid power generation system

Reliability Model of Conventional Power Generation System Conventional power plant modeled as: – Constant power source (providing max power) – Failure distribution is exponential – Repair rate is lognormal Power Required: 175 MW Allow PP: 240 MW

Raptor Model of Power System 20 MW 10 MW 40 MW

Reliability Results of Power Generation System For 1 Year Period

Reliability Model of Wind Farm Very simple model: – Each turbine produces 1 MW of constant power – Failure distribution is exponential MTTF = 4380 hrs – Repair rate is lognormal MDT = 45 hrs with a STD of 9 hrs – Does not include Weibull wind distribution or non- linear power curve – 22 turbines required to generate 20 MW of power

Raptor Model of Wind Farm

Reliability Results of Wind Farm for 1 Year Period

Reliability Model & Results of Hybrid Power Gen. System for 1 Year Period Replace most unreliable 20 MW PP with Wind Farm

Conclusions Simple models of conventional and wind farm power generation systems Not considered in scope of project were time varying power generation considerations of wind power Results showed that by adding in a wind farm to conventional power system increases system reliability considerably due to high system redundancy

20 MW System Only

20 MW with Wind Farm
