Pandemic Situation in Bangladesh Identification of first case: 18 th June, 2009 Total number of lab confirmed cases: 74 (19.08.09) Epidemiological features (36 cases) Primary cases (Returning from abroad): 24(66.7%) Secondary cases: 12 (33.3%) Age range: 1 to 46 yrs Male/ Female: 21 (58.3%)/ 15(41.7%) Number cured : 30 Number under treatment: 6 Pandemic Response and Activities: Bangladesh

Preparedness Establishment of Influenza ward/isolation units – 30 district general hospitals – 20 medical college and specialized hospitals – Formation of Pandemic Influenza Management Committees Lab facilities – test for Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 with real time RT-PCR in two labs – two BSL 3 labs (IEDCR and ICDDRB) are almost ready to start functioning Training – 5000 physicians, 150 lab medicine specialist, Red Crescent personnel Antiviral stock – Oseltamivir: 2.5 million capsules Pandemic Response and Activities: Bangladesh

Conclusion Strong rapid response teams Effective surveillance system A dedicated group at NIC Good collaboration and coordination: intra/inter national Managed the 38 pandemic cases, contact tracing professionally Has capability to handle up to several thousand cases with ease Challenges: – Constraint to increase surge capacity on a huge scale Pandemic Response and Activities: Bangladesh
