Procedure - a set of instructions for performing a task. The task can be physical or mental EXAMPLE Physical - taking the mass of a paper clip Mental – making a metric conversion Procedures are among the best known formats in technical communication. Procedures tell users "how."

1) List the materials. MATERIALS List all materials needed before listing the procedures Present supplies needed as a checkoff list

3) Write procedures as numbered lists. Begin each step with a number. The number tells readers the sequence for performing the steps.

EXAMPLE (How to start a car) Open the car door. Sit behind the steering wheel. Start the engine. Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the key away from you. Wait for the engine to start. You will hear a noise. Begin to drive.

BAD STEP: 1. Measure 25mg of salt, 35mg of sugar, and add it do 500mL of water. GOOD STEPS: 1. Measure 25mg of salt. 2. Measure 35mg of sugar. 3. Add sugar & salt to 500mL of water.

1. You will work with a partner to see if you can give good directions/procedures. 2. Without looking at your partner’s picture, take 5 minutes and write down the procedures you will tell your partner to draw your picture. 3. After 5 minutes, you will face back-to-back and give your partner directions on how to draw the picture. 4. After you are done, you will switch roles.
