Was a political scandal in the 1970’s Resulted from a break-in of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office. Lead to the resignation of President Nixon

Investigation was started after the Nixon administration tried covering it up. President resigned on August 9, 1974

Affair began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Watergate complex on June 17, 1972. The FBI traced the payments to the burglars to a fund used by Nixon’s campaign fundraising group.

It was revealed at a later date that President Nixon had a tape recording devise that he used to record conversations in his office. These tapes held information of the President talking about covering the whole ordeal up.

After a series of court battles the U.S. Supreme Court told the president that he had to hand over the tapes to the government investigators. Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974. His successor Gerald Ford issued a pardon to Nixon.

On December 7, 2006 George W. Bush’s administration’s Department of Justice dismissed seven United States Attorneys. Investigations were focused on whether the Department of Justice used this towards the administrations political advantage.

The dismissal of the attorneys had been appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate more than four years earlier.

Two other attorneys were dismissed in controversial circumstances in 2005-2006. In July 2010, the Department of Justice closed the investigation without filing charges after determining that inappropriately political, but not criminal.
