Who’s Side Are You On? Solving Algebra Equations with Variables on Both Sides
2
How do I solve this problem? 6x – 8 = 4x + 2 Let’s Check the Rules
3
RULES # 1 – Variables (letters) on the left #2 – Constants (numbers) on the right
4
ALWAYS FOLLOW THE RULES IF IT’S ON THE WRONG SIDE CHANGE THE SIGN PUT IT ON BOTH SIDES THEN BRING IT ALL DOWN
5
LEFT SIDE FIRST 6x – 8 = 4x + 2 -4x =-4x 2x – 8 = 2
6
RIGHT SIDE NEXT 2x – 8 = 2 2x = 10 + 8 = +8
7
WHEN EVERYONE IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE LEAVE IT ALONE OR JUST DIVIDE!
8
SOLVE THE EQUATION 2x = 10 ÷2 = ÷ 2 x = 5
9
NOW YOU TRY
10
HERE’S YOUR PROBLEM 10y – 1 = 3y + 20 LET’S REVIEW THE RULES
11
RULES # 1 – Variables (letters) on the left #2 – Constants (numbers) on the right
12
LEFT SIDE 10y – 1 = 3y + 20 -3y =-3y 7y – 1 = 20
13
RIGHT SIDE 7y = 21 + 1 = +1 7y – 1 = 20
14
DIVIDE y = 3 ÷7 = ÷7 7y = 21
15
THE END GREAT JOB!
