3 Political majorities Callaghan was eventually dependent on support from the Liberal Democrats Labour had no overall majority This was called the Lib-Lab Pact The Liberals supported Labour in return for promises on devolution of powers to Scotland and Wales.

4 Oil crises The economic effects of a rising oil price were longlasting Inflation soared, putting a hugfe strain on the cost of the public sector

5 Labour’s left wing The left wing of the Labour party was extremely vocal and increasingly radical Refused to abandon clause 4 (until Blair came along!)

6 Industrial relations The three day week in 1973 and 1974 meant Heath was confronted by an economic crisis and a prolonged miners strike British industry operated on a three day week in order to conserve energy Heath eventually called an election on ‘who governs Britain?’ He lost!
