4 W HAT DID STUDENTS R ECEIVE ? Guidance Curriculum on Alcohol and/or Other Drug (AOD) Use Awareness Pre/Post Assessment 313 students in 11 th Grade December 1&2 U.S. History Courses

5 W HAT DID STUDENTS R ECEIVE ? Lessons contained the following topics: Common reasons why teenagers use AOD Stages of AOD Use Effects of AOD Use Rebound Effect (Withdrawal) Drug Tolerance AOD Use and effects on Emotional Development Resources

6 T HERE IS A NEED FOR AOD U SE A WARENESS Almost 40% of 11 th graders at WHHS have used alcohol in the last 30 days CHKS Report WHHS 2009-2010 Current AOD Use, Past 30 Days

7 Almost 20% of 11 th graders at WHHS have used AOD 7 or more times in that last 30 days CHKS Report WHHS 2009-2010 Current AOD Use, Past 30 Days

8 W HY A RE W E T EACHING A BOUT A LCOHOL AND O THER D RUGS Research Shows… Students who use drugs or alcohol perform academically at a lower rate than those who do not (Jeynes, 2002). Logistic regression identified gender, race, frequent smoking, and marijuana use as statistically significant factors associated with increased odds for low academic performance. (Cox, Zhang, Johnson & March, 2007)

9 W HAT DO STUDENTS BELIEVE? I feel comfortable seeking help from an adult at WHHS about Alcohol and/or Other Drug (AOD) related issues Percent

13 Know that an adult who has been using AOD since they were a teen results in having an emotional skill set of a teenager

15 W HAT S KILLS D ID S TUDENTS LEARN? Based on a scenario, were able to identify someone in the “abuse” stage

16 S TUDENT REFLECTIONS “This lesson was very informative. It explained a lot of things usual anti-drug lessons don’t explain. Now I can use this information in the future if any of my friends are in trouble with abuse.” “I felt this was a great little activity and I actually feel like I’m leaving with new info I can apply to life and the future.” “I have an alcoholic living in my home. I will go to the website to understand how to deal with it and also learn new information.”

17 L IMITATIONS Some questions on test were difficult We could have piloted our test Not having built rapport with students before presenting a sensitive topic Having substitutes teachers for 7 out of 10 presentations

18 W HAT WENT W ELL Students received valuable information about AOD use Gained knowledge, attitude, and skills to make positive decisions about using

19 O UR G OAL With these Attitudes, Knowledge, and Skills Students will get the support they need for AOD related issues The amount of student suspensions for AOD on campus decrease Drop out rates will be reduced
