Virginia Virginia’s economy type was established when the settlers in Jamestown discovered how to grow Tobacco. As the settlers expanded their smaller farms into massive plantations they needed more people to do the manual labor required to cultivate the large amounts of cash crops that were being used to fuel the economy. Wealthy white landowners profited immensely by purchasing and using indentured servants, criminals & prisoners of war, and slaves to work the land. Those landowners/farmers that could not afford them mostly did not grow as big as the wealthy man’s plantation. Discovery Education: Watch “Unfinished Nation- Divergent Path”

Slaves were forced into a life of slavery with no hope of leaving unless they tried to sneak away. Many were caught trying to escape and were made examples of. Indentured servants, criminals and prisoners of war were also used by farm and plantation owners to fulfill the demand for manual labor to work the fields. But there weren’t enough indentured servants to fulfill the demand so slaves made up more than half of the work force Discussion Question: What do you think happened to those indentured servants, former criminals and prisoners of war, after they had gained their freedom?

Maryland Was originally meant by Sir George Calvert to be a safe place for Catholics trying to avoid persecution in England. This failed because the colony was later colonized by mostly Protestants. Watch: “Religious Struggles and the Toleration Act of 1649 The Calvert and Penn families argued about the boundary lines between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Two surveyors, Mason and Dixon, were brought in to resolve the problem.

Rebellion in Virginia Jamestown would continue to grow the decades after its successful founding and would become Virginia. As Virginia settlers expanded westward and onto native American lands, they were limited by the Virginia House of Burgesses. Those settlers were not as wealthy or established as the landowners on the east coast. Landowners on the east cost were plantation owners who were already rich or at least established. The House of Burgesses was also mostly run by those wealthy and powerful Eastern Virginians. This made western Virginians angry as they felt they were being treated unfairly and were not allowed to grow their businesses. Many of the western, more poor landowners, were Scots-Irish. They lived in the areas that were called “Backwoods”. Woods in the back of the settlement.

The Bacon Rebellion Watch: Bacon's Rebellion The backwoodsman banded together and attacked the House of Burgesses and Jamestown. Jamestown was burned to ground and Royal Governor Berkeley was forced to leave the town. Shortly there after Bacon suddenly got sick and died, and along with him the rebellion.

The Carolinas Named after King Charles the II- Carolina means “Charles’s land” Carolina started to develop into two separate societies. One to the North and one to the South. This was due mostly to economic activities. Many of the people settling Northern Carolina were originally from Virginia to the north. The Colonists in South Carolina were more wealthy landowners who took advantage of the fertile lands by setting up big businesses in Rice and Indigo. Plantations and farms in Carolina focused mainly on two types of cash crops: Rice Indigo Carolina became two Royal colonies named North and South Carolina in 1729

Georgia Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe and was the last of the 13 colonies. Oglethorpe wanted Georgia to be a place for debtors and poor people from England to have a fresh start. Because of strict rules set by the people who ran Georgia and a constant war being fought with Spain, Georgia was not able to prosper until after Spain was defeated and the settlers were allowed to develop Georgia much as the other Southern Colonies had.
