Activity #1 On your own… – Complete the handout, Muslim States: Close read the handout. Identify/define the four terms (theocracy, Berbers, Almoravids, Almohads) in your own words. Complete the map activity at the bottom of the page. 1.Theocracy: The ruler serves as both the religious and political leader. 2.Berbers: A group of Africans who converted to Islam. 3.Almoravids: Group of Berbers who dedicated their lives to spreading Islam through conquests. 4.Almohads: Group of Berbers who overthrew the Almoravids in the 1100s.

Summary How did Islam spread to North Africa?

Summary A major effect of the Almoravid and Almohad conquests was the spread of literacy to North and West Africa. Converts to Islam had to learn Arabic in order to read the Qur’an (Koran). Mosques became centers of learning. Trade and visits by Muslim scholars spread knowledge of Muslim intellectual achievements in mathematics, medicine, and astronomy to people in North and West Africa. After analyzing the provided passage, answer the following question… 1. Using evidence from the passage, explain how the Almoravid and Almohad conquests of North and West Africa affected those living in the area:
