Hydropower and Natural Gas Madeline Norman and Gracie Walden
2
Important Details of hydropower o How is this energy source used to produce electricity? They are used as water wheels, they spin and create electricity. oIs the energy source renewable or non-renewable? Why? It is renewable because water constantly cycles from water sources, from air to the land, and back to the water source. oHow long have humans used this energy source? Give examples: they have used it for thousands of years. Ex: water wheels
3
How is this energy form used in present day oExamples: Hydropower is used in dams. Dams create a lot of electricity to certain cities that have less pollution than regular electricity. When we say dams we are not talking about beaver dams made of sticks we are talking about concrete dams.
4
Advantages of this energy form (How is it good?) oWater wheels produce good electric activity. o Dams create a very large amount of electricity. o Hydroelectricity has less pollution. oIt is renewable. o They do human jobs. (water wheel)
5
Disadvantages of this energy form. (what is not good about it?) oThey often destroy other resources such as plants, forests and wild life habitats (dams). o Large numbers of fish die by dams. oHas stopped water ways from flowing. o They can increase the chance of erosion problems.
6
Important details of natural gas oHow is this energy source used to produce electricity? It provides different things for the energy to work. Your kitchen stove could use natural gas, or your car could use natural gas. o Is the energy source renewable or nonrenewable? Why? No because when you use gas you can never get it back. oHow long have humans used this energy source?
7
How is the energy form used in present day? oNatural gas is used by pumping it into vehicles to help them run, or to light up our appliances so we could cook better.
8
Advantages of this energy form (good things) oIt causes less air pollution. oThey help our cars and some appliances work and run good. oMore than 40% of the worlds energy comes from fossil fuels and natural gases. oIt is used to keep us warm, help us cook, and to keep our cars running well. oLess smog pollutants.
9
Disadvantages of this energy form (bad things) oIt is very flammable. oTransporting can cause damage to wildlife. oSulfate dioxide is released when used. oIt causes acid precipitation. oIt could cause death or explosions.
