What Animals Need: Food Water Shelter Air
3
Animals that live on land, such as giraffes, have lungs that get oxygen from the air. Insects get oxygen from the air through tiny holes in their bodies. Water animals, such as fish, get their oxygen from water. However, other water animals, such as whales, must come to the surface and breathe air to get oxygen.
4
Bodies of animals contain water. When an animal pants or sweats, it loses some water from its body. Animals must replace lost water in order to stay alive. How animals replace lost water: Drinking – puddles, streams, rivers, ponds or lakes From water in the foods they eat
5
Food gives animals what they need to grow and stay healthy. Animals get energy from food. Animals can’t make their own food: Food from eating plants Food from eating other animals Food from eating both plants and animals Animal use their body parts to get their foods. Trunks Claws Tongue
6
Shelter - or a place to live Shelter protects animals from: Other animals Weather Examples of Shelters: Nests in tree branches Hollow logs or spaces under rocks Turtle hard shells Tunnels and underground Lodge
7
Not all animals look alike, but they are all animals. Animals come in many different shapes and sizes. Birds have wings and feathers Lion has paws and fur How do animals get their features? Inherit – receive from parents Traits - the body features that an animal inherits from parents ( can include some things that animals do)
8
Four Traits of Mammals: Have fur or hair Lungs to breathe Give birth to live young Feed their young with milk made by mother’s body
9
Mammal often placed into groups based on traits they share. Trunks Pouches Wings fins Pouch Fins Trunk Wings *Exception to rule: Spiny Echidna (anteater) lays eggs
10
Four Traits of Birds Have feathers Two legs Wings Breathe with lungs Lay eggs
11
Most common traits used to group birds are beak shape and foot shape. Beak shape tells the kind of food a bird eats. Foot shape tells where a bird lives. (also important in getting food. http://www.nhptv.org/natureworks/graphics/purpgallinule2sm.jpg
12
Amphibians traits Begin life in water and move onto land as adults Lay eggs in the water Moist skin salamander newt toad frog
13
1. Young frogs hatch from eggs begin life in water 2. Breathe with gills (body part that takes in oxygen from the water) 3. Young frogs change and in time they form lungs. At this time their gills begin to disappear. They also develop other body parts that will help them live on land. 4. Once lungs work and gills and tail disappear, the adult frog is now ready to live on land.
14
Fish Traits Live whole lives in water Breathe with gills Scales (small thin flat plates protect fish Eat plants and other animals trout grouper shark Stingray swordfish
15
Scales: help fish glide thru water Body shape: allows them to move easily thru water Gills: take in oxygen from water Tail fin: allows fish move side to side Fins: allow fish to move forward and backward or turn in other directions
16
Some fish carry their eggs inside their bodies until eggs hatch. Most fish lay eggs in water Some fish care for eggs by guarding them Most fish leave their eggs alone after their laid Young fish are very small when they are hatched and must find their food and avoid enemies without help from parents
17
Reptiles Traits Body covered by scales Live mostly on land Lay eggs Breathe with lungs
18
There are 3 main groups of reptiles: Lizards and snakes Alligators and crocodiles Tortoises and turtles
