Prestigious History Founded in 1924 at Johns Hopkins to recognize excellence and promote graduate study in public health Curate classic materials and texts that are generally out of print or not widely available. National Honorary Members: – U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin (2011) – Congressman John Porter (2000) – Dr. Sara Josephine Baker (1924)

Current Society 14,000+ members at all stages in their careers from recent graduates to the acting U.S. Surgeon General 70+ chapters stretching from Alaska to Puerto Rico – Chapter-based so Delta Omega is tailored to each school and program’s strengths and needs Collaborative and competitive events foster networks – Day of Service – Student Poster Session at APHA – Innovative Curriculum Award

Competitive Criteria Students: Chapters may induct up to 10% of the graduating student body. All student inductees must be in the upper 25% of their class academically. Faculty: Either five members or 3% of the full-time faculty, whichever is less. Alumni: A maximum of 10 graduates whose work in the practice of public health would serve as a model for future graduates of the school. Honorary: Only conferred upon persons possessing exceptional qualifications and those who have attained meritorious distinction in public health field.

Student Poster Session Since 1998, Delta Omega has sponsored a student poster session at the APHA Public Health Expo. – Showcases excellent scholarship and research – Students do not have to be Delta Omega members, but they must be nominated by active chapter Students receive cash prize, present at poster session, and are honored at Delta Omega Reception

Chapter Awards Recognizes chapters for activities and community service. – Chapter of the Year Award – Active Chapter Award – Chapter Service Award – New Chapter of the Year Award Highlights best practices and offers insights to help fellow chapters engage in activities Winners recognized at Delta Omega Annual Meeting and present their practices to the National Council

Establishing Your Chapter No fee to establish or maintain a chapter Applications are accepted on a rolling basis Application must consist of: – Letter of interest by school’s dean or program chair – Two letters of support by faculty/staff to lead the chapter in its initial year – Proposed timeline for chapter's first year Decision process typically takes 2-3 weeks. Once approved, a chapter may begin its work immediately.

Maintaining a Chapter Required activities: – Have yearly inductions of members – Submit brief chapter report after each induction – Pay national dues of $40 per inductee (covers lifetime membership) Suggested activities: – Host annual Delta Omega lecture – Sponsor an Awards Dinner – Address new students at orientation – Sponsor best dissertation and present a plaque – Hold chapter luncheon with guest speakers – And more!
