Finding and Using Inverse Functions: Lesson 50
2
LESSON OBJECTIVE: 1)Recognize and solve direct and joint variation problems. 2)Recognize and solve inverse variation problems.
3
DEFINITIONS: 1)Direct variation – The statement "y varies directly as x," means that when x increases, y increases by the same factor. In other words, y and x always have the same ratio where k is the constant of variation. y = kx or
4
DEFINITIONS: 2)Inverse variation: The statement "y varies inversely as x means that when x increases, y decreases by the same factor where k is the constant of variation. xy = k or y 1 x 1 = y 2 x 2
5
Please get out the worksheets “Direct, Joint and Inverse Variation” and “4-8 Practice: Direct and Inverse Variation” so I can show you examples of how to use direct and inverse variations.
