Your Only Son…. Jesus as the “only begotten” The doctrine of begettal Two words in consideration Hebrew = YALAD Greek = MONOGENES Understanding the meaning of these words helps define the doctrine
14
Hebrew = YALAD To bear young To act as a midwife To show lineage * Appears 497 times in OT Should NOT be understood that somehow God gave birth to Jesus. Rather that God anointed Jesus to a specific office/status/task
15
Greek: MONOGENES Appears 9 times in the NT Only born One and Only Unique John 3:16 – “ For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…”
16
MONOGENES Five times used by John to describe Jesus Three times used by Luke to describe the only child of parents Once used by the Hebrews writer to describe Isaac, the “only begotten” of Abraham. Indicates uniqueness rather than birth.
17
Monogenes… Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament… “pertaining to being the only one of its kind within a specific relationship…” and, “pertaining to being the only one of its kind or class, unique in kind.”
18
Why Did God Beget Jesus? Psalm 2 – “ …But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain…’Ask of Me, and I will surely give you the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession….Do homage to the Son…How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!”
19
Begotten As Son So That… Hebrews 2:17 – “Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”
20
Needing To Be Led By God Philippians 2:5-11 Emptied Himself Bond servant Likeness of men So that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow
21
John 8:28-29 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.”
22
THE Lamb of God As proclaimed by John John 1:29 -- “ The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’”
23
Who Is Our Passover 1 Corinthians 5:7 – “ Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.”
24
God’s Gift Of Love Rejected Mark 8:31 -- And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Matthew 21:42 – “ Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures, ‘T HE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, T HIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone; T HIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE L ORD, A ND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES ’?”
25
A Lamb Of God We are the sheep of His pasture. Psalm 100:3 – “Know that the Lord Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”
26
He Is The Good Shepherd John 10:11-15 – “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep…I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.”
27
THE Lamb Saves MANY Lambs We love Jesus today because He is God’s King. We love Him because He is our Savior. We love Him because He is our Passover Lamb. We love Him because His blood purchased us for God. (Washed BY the blood) We love Him because sacrificed Himself to save us from our sins.
