The English Colonial Model Focus on building agriculturally based colonies on mainland North America Sent LARGE groups of men AND women Colonial life would mirror life in England. Mercantilist relationship England: Manufactured Goods America: Raw Materials However, there will NOT be one type of English colony in America.

What PULLED English Colonists to America? Lots of available land Potential for economic advancement Guaranteed the same rights as Englishmen Religious “Freedom” Opportunity to counter Catholic Spain

Corporate Colonies Joint-Stock Companies granted a charter by the monarch Companies could select their own governors and political leaders

Proprietary Colonies Monarch makes a land grant to a favored proprietor who will make decisions regarding the management of the colony

Royal Colonies Colonies established directly under the authority of the monarch and whose governor is chosen by the crown.

American Identity? Spanish conquest introduces slave labor (Africans) and a model to exterminate native tribes. Native tribes provide agricultural and geographical knowledge (political structure??)
