MORE CLUES ABOUT THE LOST COLONY OF ROANOKE

RECAP OF CLUES FROM THE FILM… 1.Dare Stones were found in the Southern United States. These were inscribed with messages from the colonists. 2.“CROATOAN” etched on Roanoke Colony site. Refers to a nearby island as well as a group of Native Americans 3.Secret fort found on a map made by John White. This could be the location of a proposed fort and a point where colonists could have tried to reach. 4.Sassafras found near area where Dare Stones were found. Sassafras could have been an essential resource to treat diseases. 5.Stones found near the “secret fort” were the same type as the Dare Stones.

MORE CLUES… From John White's journal 1590 Therefore at my departure from them in Anno 1587 I willed them, that if they should happen to be distressed in any of those places, that then they should carve over the letters or name, a Crosse in this form, but we found no such sign of distress. Add to notes: No sign of distress was ever discovered at the Roanoke Colony site

MORE CLUES… Taken from a scientific reference of the WDC Paleonclimatology Archive “Some light has been shed on this mystery by a group of scientists who used the rings of bald cypress trees (Taxodium distichum) to reconstruct the history of drought for this region. A drought reconstruction, stretching back to 1185, indicates that the most severe growing season drought and the most severe three year period of drought in 800 years coincided with the disappearance of the Roanoke Island Colonists.” Add to notes: There was likely a drought (not enough water) during the time when the Roanoke Colony Disappeared

MORE CLUES… In 1564, a group of French Protestants, called Huguenots (HYOO-guh-nahts), founded a colony called Fort Caroline. Before long, Spanish troops under the command of Pedro Menendez de Aviles arrived in that area. "This is the armada of the King of Spain," he announced, "who has sent me [here] to burn and hang the Lutheran [Protestant] French." Menendez built a fort, St. Augustine, a short distance away. Then he brutally massacred the French. Add to notes: Before the Roanoke Colony existed, Spain was known to attack and murder North American settlements.

MORE CLUES… Clark, Josh "What Happened to the Lost Colony at Roanoke?" The Jamestown colonists sent out several search parties to find members of the lost colony and made a habit of questioning any Native Americans with whom the Jamestown members made contact. Some of these natives told tales of white settlements further down the coast, with two-story, thatched-roof houses, a style unique to the English. Others told of nearby tribes who could read English and dressed similarly to Europeans. Perhaps the most dramatic report from Jamestown was the sighting of a boy dressed as a native. He had blond hair and was fair-skinned. Add to notes: There is evidence of “fair-skinned” Native Americans which could mean that the Roanoke colonists joined a friendly tribe for survival
