Global Poverty A focus on poverty around the world, and on what you could do about it Developed by Tony Ryan

The Scenario One billion people on the planet still live in extreme poverty Another 1.5 billion live in poverty In Africa alone, 15000 people die each day from preventable diseases With a 20 cent innoculation per child, millions of children could be immunised

A further one billion people on the planet live a functional existence, and the remainder are (in most cases) comfortable or very well-off. When the last group hear of this poverty, their responses include: –You’re just trying to make me feel guilty –No matter what happens, they’d still be poor –Any aid material is squandered by their ruling tyrants –I can’t do anything about it anyway –Or even: What can I do about it?

Your Quest In these lessons, you will be asked to decide upon something that YOU can do about world poverty To develop this Plan, conduct some research, and determine the levels of world poverty for yourself Brainstorm what could be done (by you, or a group of friends) Outline your plan of action, and present it to the class

Core Understandings That different levels of poverty exist around the world That each person can contribute to a solution in some small way

Guiding Questions What does poverty really mean? Does extreme poverty exist amongst some people in Australia? Given your core values, how do you feel about extreme poverty in other countries? What really can be done by people in 1 st world countries? What are YOU prepared to do?

Some Research “The End Of Poverty” (Jeffrey Sachs) “50 Facts That Should Change The World” (Jessica Williams) “Change The World For 10 Bucks” http://www.earthinstitute.columbia. edu/endofpoverty/oda.html www.unicef.com.au www.worldvision.com.au

Getting Started “ The Aust govt will immediately double its financial contribution to alleviating poverty in Africa”. Discuss this statement with a PMI. Conduct a Paired Interview, using these questions: –Q. Given your core values, how do you feel about extreme poverty in other countries? –Q. What do you think would need to be done to alleviate extreme poverty within 20 years?

Individual Contributions Q. What really can individuals do? Brainstorm at least 20 options Remember the rules for group brainstorming: –Come up with lots of ideas –Make no judgment of any ideas –Ridiculous ideas are encouraged –You can tag onto any other ideas

A Key Task Develop a simple rubric to show what could be done by –a) governments, and –b) individuals. Join into groups of 4 Set 3 standards of contribution for each group Place on large sheets, and Go Shopping for ideas from other groups

A Continuum Using the rubric you developed, decide where you stand on the ‘line’ (from zero to hero) Explain your stance, and given this, what specific action you will take by the end of this year

Wrapping Up There are over ten million adults in Australia Multiply what you intend to do by ten million (make it six million, just to be reasonable) Q. What sort of difference would that make? Explain your answer to a partner
