Preparing for the Future “The current and future health of America’s 21st Century Economy depends directly on how broadly and deeply Americans reach a new level of literacy— ‘21st Century Literacy’—that includes strong academic skills, thinking, reasoning, teamwork skills, and proficiency in using technology.” --21st Century Workforce CommissionNational Alliance of Business “ If we consider technology a tool to support education,...it is natural to recognize the need for training in the skills necessary to utilize the tool. ” -- (Technology Integration for Teachers Oct., 2006) “The current and future health of America’s 21st Century Economy depends directly on how broadly and deeply Americans reach a new level of literacy— ‘21st Century Literacy’—that includes strong academic skills, thinking, reasoning, teamwork skills, and proficiency in using technology.” --21st Century Workforce CommissionNational Alliance of Business “ If we consider technology a tool to support education,...it is natural to recognize the need for training in the skills necessary to utilize the tool. ” -- (Technology Integration for Teachers Oct., 2006)

Achieving 21st Skills for All In order for technology to become a seamless tool for digital communications, students must be emerged in the training and use of a variety of applications. --http://www.21stcenturyskills.org

Current Computer Applications I provides solid training in document formatting and word processing, but it only introduces spreadsheets and presentations. It does not include databases. The middle school introduces students to multimedia through projects in content area. Although students are able to complete projects with the help and supervision of teachers, the students do not develop the ability to repeat the process on their own. Individual teachers assign projects in the content area using technology. Projects are not required by all teachers in a department. Therefore, some students will be exposed to technology as a problem solver, but not all. Neither approach produces mastery for the majority of students. Each approach has its merits; however, alone each approach falls short of producing the results necessary for success. Both are needed to develop mastery. There is not time enough in one semester to develop skills in all the areas that students will need for college and work. It is also is unlikely that computer and software skills will not continue to change. Therefore, students must be able to adapt from one program to another. Achieving this level of transfer of skills requires a person to be well-grounded in technology. Neither approach produces mastery for the majority of students. Content area teachers are not assigning projects regularly because it takes time from teaching content to teach the skills needed Another reason teachers do not assign technology projects is because they are unfamiliar with the tools The success with word processing skill level is that it is taught in Computer Apps and used in most classes We learn best that which we must use Content area teachers are not assigning projects regularly because it takes time from teaching content to teach the skills needed Another reason teachers do not assign technology projects is because they are unfamiliar with the tools The success with word processing skill level is that it is taught in Computer Apps and used in most classes We learn best that which we must use

In order for students to be capable of making decisions about the best use of technology, it is necessary for them to master the skills and be able to use them without supervision and to decide which tool is most efficient for the job at hand. To do this students need more training and understanding of the use of technology applications. Benefits for Students Strength of this approach is that students will receive computer training for 3 years, but it will not be in isolation. It will be reinforced throughout the school in classes. It will require the student to make practical application of techology.

In today ’ s wired, networked society it is imperative that students understand how to communicate using technology … Information technologies do not change what is required for high quality interactive communications, but it does add new dimensions that need to be mastered so they become transparent; otherwise they may interfere with rather than enhance communication. -21st Century Workforce Commission National Alliance of Business[xiv]
