Sight to the Blind – Part I John 8:48-59

Burroughs You do not find one godly man who came out of an affliction worse than when he went into it.

John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Exodus 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the L ORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me

Job 4:7-9 Remember: who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? 8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. 9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.

Job 8:6 …if you are pure and upright, surely then he will rouse himself for you and restore your rightful habitation.

Ezekiel 18:1-3 The word of the L ORD came to me: 2 “What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? 3 As I live, declares the Lord G OD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel.

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

John 11:1-4 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

God’s Works… I.Seeking Man

Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

God’s Works… I.Seeking Man II.Caring for Man

Matthew 20:28 …even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

1 Peter 5:7 …casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

God’s Works… I.Seeking Man II.Caring for Man III.Love & Compassion

Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

God’s Works… I.Seeking Man II.Caring for Man III.Love & Compassion IV.Delivering from Darkness & Giving Sight

Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son

John 4:34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Horatius Bonar I heard the voice of Jesus say, I am this dark world’s light, Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise And all thy days be bright. I looked to Jesus and I found In Him my Star, my Sun; And in that light of life I’ll walk, Till travelling days are done.

Psalm 146:8 …the L ORD opens the eyes of the blind.

Isaiah 35:5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped

2 Kings 5:10-14 Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.” 11 But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the L ORD his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them…

2 Kings 5:10-14 …and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage. 13 But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

John 2:5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Ephesians 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.

AW Pink It is not a matter of mending his glasses (reformation), or of correcting his vision (education and culture), or of eye ointment (religion). None of these reach, or can reach, the root of the trouble.

Matthew Henry Those whose eyes are opened, and whose hearts are cleansed by grace, being known to be the same person, but widely different in character, live as monuments to the Redeemer’s glory, and recommend his grace to all who desire the same precious salvation.
