PHILANTHROPY IN FULL SWING Newman’s Own initially supported several organizations, including Scott Newman Foundation, Meals on Wheels, Literacy Volunteers, Flying Doctors, Actor’s Studio Newman wanted to add personal touch to the foundation Created Hole in the Wall Gang Camp: designed as a summer camp completely free of charge for children with life-threatening illnesses around-the-clock care state of the art medical facilities 300-acre replica of an Old Western town The first Camp opened in Connecticut in the summer of 1988, and 288 children came from around the world to enjoy the experience.

PHILANTHROPY IN FULL SWING CONT. Expanded Newman’s Own so as to include not only salad dressing and spaghetti sauce, but also salsa, popcorn, lemonade, cookies, and other various items Grew to be the size of a Fortune-500 company With this in mind, Newman sought to raise the level of giving of other fortune-500 companies who could afford to give significant donations Created the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy in 1992 $200,000 was given to the Rwandan Relief Fund in 1994 ] In 1999, $250,000 was given to Catholic Relief Services to aid refugees of Kosovo In 2007, Newman donated $10 million to Kenyon College, the place that inspired him to become the person he was

IMPACT OF NEWMAN’S PHILANTHROPY TODAY He practically invented corporate philanthropy: “not some, but all’ Newman’s own Foundation now has four centers of focus for its work: general philanthropy Children Empowerment nutrition Foundation supports more than twenty-three organizations outside Newman Family Foundations Contributes to over twenty-five military services that help give back to US Veterans More than $430 million dollars have been donated to charitable efforts since its foundation in 1982 (“Mission”) in the form of more than 21,000 grants, in all 50 states and over 15 different countries In 2014 alone, over 800 different grants were given, totaling $26 million

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR Newman has also been called a social entrepreneur: “a person who has demonstrated a natural expression of visionary leadership, a spiritually and ethically-based mission to seek the common good, and a virtual necessity to create sustainability for the people and the planet” This is undoubtedly true– he developed the biggest philanthropic corporation of its nature Also one in that he founded the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy Today,, the Committee provides several multi-million dollar companies with avenues for giving, and helps other people found corporate philanthropy organizations like Newman’s Own.

PARTICULAR IMPACT ON CHILDREN Hole in the Wall Gang Camp today is the world’s “single largest family of camps dedicated to assisting children with serious and life-threatening conditions” (“Mission”). Thirteen more camps have been established throughout the United States and the world More than 114,000 children have attended a Hole in the Wall Gang Camp as of 2014 The Camp has touched the lives of so many– “For the first time in my life, I have a friend, I’ve never had a friend before, because I’ve been in a wheelchair most of my life, so kids avoided me. So, thank you Mr. Newman for this camp” (Hotchner, Newman 221). Scott Newman foundation created Rowdy Ridge Gang Camp for children and families affected by drug and alcohol abuse Newman’s Own Foundation continues to further the mission of aided children in need, as well as providing education

THIS WASN’T FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT Newman occasionally encountered the criticism that his philanthropic works were solely for the advancement of his acting career, and were simply a publicity stunt This statement is patently untrue He showed a commitment to philanthropy that spanned over 40 years Spent incredible amounts of time creating and developing Newman’s Own himself Maintained director’s figure until his passing

CONCLUSION Paul Newman has had a great impact on the world He has bettered the lives of so many, particularly children May be remembered as an actor, but his philanthropic works were equally, if not more, important “I’d like to be remembered as a guy who tried—tried to be a part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn’t complacent, who doesn’t cop out” (Levy 87).
