Agenda Background Problem Statement Stakeholders Use Scenarios Customer Requirements Engineering Requirements House of Quality Risk Analysis Preliminary Schedule Vision for Next Phase

Background of Project End user frequently uses manual wheelchair. Looking for assistance with day to day movement (namely for school) Current assistance options are outside of their price range. Seeking low impact solution

Problem Statement Current State: Manual requires extensive individual effort on the part of the user, cheapest option. Motor driven wheelchairs take up all the effort, but systems are typically very expensive and remove independence of the user. Motor assisted wheelchair would aim to be in between, supplying supplemental power without taking entire load off the user. Desired State: Removable, reusable, and lightweight addition to wheelchair to aid user with mobility. Project Goals Prototype a wheelchair addition to assist user for a full working day in multiple environments without impeding manual usage.

Stakeholders Primary Customer Wheelchair User Facilitator RIT Health Care Professionals Technicians who install/work on system MSD Group Possible Investors Wheelchair Manufacturer Insurance companies

Use Case Scenario #1 A person in a wheelchair is rolling along when they come across an incline.

Use Case Scenario #2 A person in a wheelchair is using the assist device outdoors when they begin slipping on any ice surface

Use Case Scenario #3 A person in a wheelchair is using the assist device when they inadvertently go over a curb.

Customer Requirements

Engineering Requirements

Engineering Requirements vs Customer Requirements

House of Quality Results

Risk Analysis Technical Motor doesn't work properly User interface does not respond Out of power Too much additional weight Safety Overheat Breaking system fails Tipping due to changing center of gravity Wheelchair becomes too heavy Resource Unable to acquire a wheelchair Time restraint for extensive testing Lack of funding for essential parts Environmental/Societal Pollution by the assist device Violations of legal regulations Hinder mobility of others in the area

Preliminary Schedule

Vision for Next Phase Resolve all customer needs through engineering requirements System design complete (engineering review) Evaluate results from concept generation Continue risk management Assess skills/resources needed Assess performance limitations Generate test plan
