2 Outline of today’s session Introducing Oxlip+  What is it?  Logging on  Finding databases & electronic journals  Cross Searching  My Research – saving articles, databases etc. Effective searching – an example using International Bibliography of Social Sciences Practical examples

3 SOLO, OLIS and OxLIP+ SOLO – Search Oxford Libraries Online  A search and retrieval tool for locating print and electronic resources in the library catalogue and Oxford Research Archive, the University’s electronic depository  Also searches for databases by title (e.g. Lexis, EconLit, Social Science Citation Index, Education Index etc)  “Articles and databases sampler” allows you to search within some databases by subject OLIS – Oxford Libraries Information System  The library catalogue proper – search in more detail for the location of books, link to e- journals, access your reader account, reserve and renew items online OxLIP+ – Oxford Libraries Information Platform  Main gateway to electronic resources including databases and full-text digital archives  http://oxlip-plus.ouls.ox.ac.uk/ http://oxlip-plus.ouls.ox.ac.uk/  Now includes Oxford University e-Journals Linked A-Z of online journals Formerly http://sfx7.exlibrisgroup.com/oxford/azhttp://sfx7.exlibrisgroup.com/oxford/az

4 What is Oxlip+? A gateway for connecting to and navigating Oxford’s huge selection of electronic resources  Includes databases, electronic reference works, statistics, e-journals and e-book packages.  Facilitates connection to e-resources from on & off campus  Allows you to find useful e-resources for your subject A tool for searching within certain databases by entering keywords  Can search up to 5 databases simultaneously  Not available for all databases  The databases’ own search interfaces can offer more sophisticated search options and better functionality than “CrossSearch” A store for your own personal archive of preferred databases, e-journals and articles, with the option to save the details and results of searches you have made

5 Accessing OxLIP+ From SOLO:

6 Accessing OxLIP+ Link from any OULS/Bodleian Library website. Many will also allow you to search SOLO and OxLIP+ using an embedded search box.

8 Logging in For full functionality “Log in” Gives you full “password free” access even if you are off campus Allows you to save your favourite databases

9 Choose University of Oxford from the drop down menu – its under U! Logging in Choose University of Oxford from the list of institutions

10 Logging in Enter your Single Sign-On username and password. This is the same as your Oxford Webmail logon

11 Logging in Click here!

12 Logging in You are now logged in If you are using a public computer you should log out before you leave the computer. If you remain logged in others will be able to access your details (including e-mail)

15 “Find Database” options Find resources using title keywords or by browsing the A-Z list Find databases by entering subject keywords, database type or publisher Browse resources by subject

16 Finding e-Resources: Results Click on the title to connect directly to the resource Click on “i” for information about the database Click “+” to add to clipboard – adds the databases to your favourites in “My Research” section.

20 Browsing by Subject: results The magnifying glass indicates that a database can be “cross searched” from within Oxlip+ Next page

21 Legend has it…. Yellow flag – indicates that you may be prompted to log on with your Oxford single sign on (even if you have already logged on to Oxlip+) Green arrow - Database requires “thin client software”. Follow the link to load the software. NOTE – you will only need to do this once. Key - Database requires a password (other than your SSO). Follow the instructions for getting passwords in the legend. Log in to Oxlip+ to connect to this database. You will only see this icon when you are off campus

22 Finding Resources: Other Options Filter by subject Enter keywords Filter by resource type (e.g. Full- text, journal, website etc.) Searches the description, title and keywords in the “information” panel for each database Does not search the contents of the database Use it to find a databases suitable for your subject, not to conduct a literature search.

29 Click on the red journal title hyperlink to proceed. Click on the “+” icon to add to favourites saved in the My Research section

30 Linking to e-Journals Check the availability of the required journal issue here Fill in the details and click “Go” to link to the publisher/provider’s website and find your article Click on these links to search for hard copies in Oxford, elsewhere in the UK, or even worldwide

31 Cross-Searching

32 CrossSearch: Opening Screen The “CrossSearch” opening screen shows new titles across all subjects on Oxlip+. Choose your own subject from the subjects drop down menu and then choose an appropriate sub category

33 Step 1: Choose a Subject & Sub-category Choose your subject Choose an appropriate sub- category (if available). Use Boolean operators if required

34 Step 2: Choose Databases to Search Only databases with a check box may be cross searched If you are going to search the same set of databases regularly, create a “QuickSet”. Use the “+” icon to add databases to the clipboard and then use “My Research” to group them into a QuickSet.

35 Step 3: Enter Your Search Terms Choose search fields

36 Step 4: Wait for Your Results… The number of hits for each database is shown here. Click “View” to see the results from a particular database. OxLIP+ will automatically take you to the combined results page.

37 Cross Search Results: Titles View Sort options (A-Z by author/title, year…) Refine options. Narrow down your results by seeing only those from a particular topic, date, author, subject… Note – this does not initiate a new search, it just selects from within your results Clicking on the title takes you to more information (full bibliographic record including publication information and abstract where available) Check for full text Add to “My Articles” within Oxlip+ (requires you to log in)

38 Cross Search: Full View Check for full text Email, save, add to “My Articles” Clicking on subject terms initiates a new search on OxLIP+ for related records. Return to full list of results

42 My Research – Personal Storage Area Store a list of articles in the “My Articles” area Email selected references or save and export them to reference management software Remove article from list Save an article in another folder

43 My Research : My Databases My databases – Allows you to organise your favourite databases into “Quicksets” which can then be searched using “Cross Search” (if the databases are cross searchable) Create a new “Quickset” Use arrows to add databases to each quickset that you create
