ESDS overview Provides access and support for key economic and social data Distributed service, bringing together centres of expertise in data creation, dissemination, preservation and use Provides seamless and easier access to a range of disparate resources for UK Higher and Further Education sectors Core archiving services plus four specialist data services Built on a foundation of the UK Data Archive, which recently celebrated its 40 th anniversary
6
ESDS holdings Data for research and teaching purposes and used in all sectors and for many different disciplines Official agencies - mainly central government Individual academics - research grants Market research agencies Public records/historical sources Links to UK census data Qualitative and quantitative International statistical time series History data service in-house (HDS) Access to international data via links with other data archives worldwide (ICPSR, ZA) 5,000+ datasets in the collection 280+ new datasets are added each year 46,000 registered users 3,000+ user support queries 60,000 downloads worldwide p.a.

Data Catalogue search
23
Data Catalogue – search options
24
NESSTAR Online data browsing and analysis system Allows users to search for, locate, browse and analyse and download a wide variety of statistical data within a web browser UK Data Archive, as service provider for ESDS, hosts a NESSTAR server populated by its most popular data series Registering with ESDS required, if exploratory analysis beyond browsing metadata is intended
25
ESDS NESSTAR catalogue
26
NESSTAR Browse detailed information (metadata) about these data sources, including links to other sources Do simple data analysis and visualisation on microdata Bookmark analysis Download the appropriate subset of data in one of a number of formats (e.g. SPSS, Excel)
