CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology My name is Rick Zeller, I’m an 8 th grade math teacher at Happy Valley Elementary School in Anderson, CA. My web site is http://berners.bcoe.butte.k12.ca.us/~rzellerhttp://berners.bcoe.butte.k12.ca.us/~rzeller My e-mail is rzeller@shastalink.k12.ca.usrzeller@shastalink.k12.ca.us This is an Algebra I lesson for 8 th grade students or above. Students will use the internet as directed to particular sites to review an algebra topic. They will then present their information, or lesson, to other students in the class.

Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM ! CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology Expectations Integrate the Internet in lesson designs Learn and use PowerPoint and Excel Keep informed of latest educational technologies Collaborate with technology using educators Use technology to increase interest and learning in the classroom

Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM ! CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology Outcomes Learning Achieved:  Design techniques for building web pages  PowerPoint and Excel  Connecting standards to web lessons  How to publish on the web  Sources for lessons integrating technology

Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM ! CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology Successes  Increased student interest  Increased independent use of math web sites  Student awareness of additional resources  Students as “teachers” in presentations

Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM ! CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology Shortcomings  Limited to only 8 students online at any time  Lacking large monitor hookup to demonstrate for entire class  Students needed more individual guidance after retrieving information from the web  More time needed for students to prepare their own lessons for small groups

Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM ! CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology After reviewing the results of the pretest and the posttest, I decided to make some changes on both tests. I chose problems that would be very similar to the problems students would be directed to on the web site. I also will give students specific algebra topics from which to choose, so that they will be more closely aligned with the pre and posttests. Revisions

Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM ! CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology Conclusions The emphasis on standards based lessons seems to be a theme throughout education currently. I feel that it’s important when using technology that standards are included. Lessons become more meaningful with aligned outcomes in place. The Internet is only one part of our present technology, but it is such a vast field of information that students need direction when using it. I believe that through this program, much of that direction will be put in place as teachers add to the bank of lessons.

Rick Zeller, Happy Valley Elementary School EQUATIONS ? NO PROBLEM ! CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology Conclusions continued Having completed this course, I feel confident that I can use my acquired skills and resources to create additional lessons integrated with technology. I will also be able to find standards based lessons that others have already composed. I would encourage other teachers to participate in future courses. The knowledge gained is worth the time and energy required.
