Starter Imagine you desperately needed the internet. You do not have broadband or dial up. How could you access it? What technology do you know of that you could use?

Objectives Understand the different ways in which we can connect to the internet. Know what internet connections are available. Be able to select the most appropriate method of internet connection.

The connections you need to know Broadband (DSL) Satellite Mobile Communications (3G) Dial-Up Cable

Mobile Communications 3G (and soon to be released 4G) Accessing the internet / using data connection via mobile technology. Can be via mobile phones. Can be on computer using a USB ‘dongle’ often provided by phone providers. HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access) A high speed fast mobile internet access technology. 7MBPS (with newer versions reaching 20+ mbps) Need to be in a 3G or HSDPA area. Need special equipment. Can stream and download relatively well. Often a monthly fee.

Quick Task Explore some mobile phone web sites. I want you to find an example of mobile internet. When you find one find out: What equipment is provided. How much does it cost. What is the speed.

Main Task Begin working on a presentation which explains the different internet connections available: Type of connection An example of a company that provides that connection (costs, speed etc). Who would use the connection with examples. Good and bad points of the connection. Broadband (DSL) Satellite Mobile Communications (3G) Dial-Up Cable
