Networking Components James Rouse LTEC 4550.020 Network Administration March 15, 2014 Assignment 3
2
HUB Layer 1 OSI device All attached devices are one collision domain Advertised bandwidth shared between attached devices Network design must follow 5-4-3 rule – 5 segments – <= 4 hubs – <= 3 segments active
3
HUB Used in small offices with small budgets Extends network/adds nodes Price: sub $50
4
SWITCH Layer 2 OSI device Isolates each port to single collision domain Support multiple physical connection types Advertised bandwidth dedicated per port Can be managed or unmanaged (providing further segmenting of network, metrics, security, etc)
5
SWITCH Used in small, medium and enterprise networks Network monitoring/reporting Security Price: Unmanaged: $10-$300 Smart: $150-500 Managed: $200-thousands+
6
ROUTER Layer 3 OSI device Connects opposing networks Ex: private <> ISP Provides filtering of traffic by node or network segment Can provide firewall, VPN, and traffic shaping capabilities
7
ROUTER Used to separate networks Provide additional security features Price: -SMB: $40-$1000 -Enterprise: $1000- hundreds of thousands
8
BRIDGE Layer 2 OSI Device Extends a segment beyond limits by regenerating signal Joins two network segments of like or differing standards/protocols Sometimes referred to as repeater
9
BRIDGE Often used in wireless networks Price $30-300
10
GATEWAY Edge of network before “cloud topology” External facing edge of DMZ Most often a router or software proxy Price: variable depending on complexity and equipment used.
11
FIREWALL Hardware or software based network communications filter Can filter for a node or entire network Can be external facing edge or behind gateway in DMZ Often incorporated in many physical routers
12
WIRELESS ACCESS POINT Layer 2 OSI Device Bridge – between wireless segments or physical <> wireless Allows wireless clients to access devices on physical network Can be a router Can have or communicate with a network access device to provide access filtering
13
WIRELESS ACCESS POINT Used to connect wireless clients to physical network Used to connect wireless networks together Price: $30-several thousand
