4 More stuff… Review mandatory handouts Review essay types

5 Humorist essay- argument What is an argument in the academic world? Rule 1: A good argument makes an overall claim that relevantly supports the decision in the case. Rule 2: A good argument goes on to support that overall claim with good reasons. Rule 3: A good argument overtly addresses disagreement. Rule 4: A good argument relies only on premises that the audience will take as true. Rule 5: A good argument uses a variety of kinds of support. Rule 6: A good argument doesn't mix arguments together. Rule 7: A good argument is simple, clear and focused. In sum: Claim Evidence/support Counter-argument Appeals to audience Clarity and focus

6 In his 2004 book, Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton argues that the chief aim of humorists is not merely to entertain but “to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly.” Because society allows humorists to say things that other people cannot or will not say, de Botton sees humorists as serving a vital function in society. Think about the implications of de Botton’s view of the role of humorists (cartoonists, stand-up comics, satirical writers, hosts of television programs, etc.). Then write an essay that defends, challenges, or qualifies de Botton’s claim about the vital role of humorists. Use specific, appropriate evidence to develop your position.

7 Evaluation Read the sample essay and rubric. Give the essay a score and write a three-sentence rationale. Compare your rationale to the AP scorers’. If we have time: review your paper and give it a score and write your rationale. Then, complete an outline for your essay. *Homework: find your research proposal and annotated bibliography
