1 5-20 ESL Intro to Social Issues
Identifying Social Issues in our Community Crowe 2015

2 Objective and Warm Up Warm Up (10 minutes) Look at the picture.
Objective: IWBAT identify and define relevant social issues through discussion based on a video clip, and discuss what social issues are present in my daily life in my community, by sharing what I know about each issue in spoken and written statements. Language Objective: IWBAT use sentence starters to create complete statements in English incorporating new content vocabulary in order to express what I already know about these issues. Warm Up (10 minutes) Use the post it notes to make comments about the images and you see around the room. Look at the picture. Write words, phrases or sentences to describe what you see or what you know. Use the examples to help you form statements in English! How do these images make you feel? What does this image mean to you? **Written AGENDA – silent first 10 then plenty of time to talk and share! Students are walking around the room QUIETLY (try for silent) JUST look, read and write first! Students are using post it notes to write statements about what they know or see – can write in Spanish or native language if they do not know the term or cannot express the idea in English.

3 Class Definitions and Word Bank
Turn and Talk (3 minutes): Discuss what you wrote on your post it notes for each chart. What are social Issues? How will we define these terms for use in our classroom? What other words are important to include with our definition? What are examples of social issues? How are social issues related to place? How are cities different in cities? Why do you think this may be? Poverty Crime Personal Relationships Gang Violence Immigration Education Divorce Homelessness Students are sharing out after a turn and talk to discuss what they wrote on their post its

4 Watch the video and take notes.
What social issue is evident in this video? How so? Explain using evidence from the movie clip.

5 Where do we see Social Issues in our Community?
What social issues do you see in your neighborhood? What social issues do you see in the community around you?  Use the sentence starter below, find TWO other people in the room to share out, your completed sentence. The social issues that I see in my neighborhood are…. I know this because… I see __________ and ___________ in my community. Social issues like ________ affect my community because… The social issues that affect me are… I say this because… Students pair up and practice what they are going to say in English.

7 Crime How does crime affect the people you see in these images?

8 Immigration Why is immigration a social issue?

9 Violence How does violence affect the people in a community?

10 Why is education a social issue?

11 Divorce How is divorce a social issue? How could this issue affect others in the community?
