Pythagorean Theorem Determine if you have a right angle. Using a protractor determine if the angle is a 90o angle. A 90° angle is called a right angle. A right triangle is a triangle with a 90° angle.
3
Pythagorean Theorem In a right triangle, the side opposite the 90° angle is called the hypotenuse and the remaining two sides are called the legs.
4
Pythagorean Theorem The formula means the sum of the squares of the two legs (a 2 + b 2 ) will equal the square of the hypotenuse (c 2 ). The formula means the sum of the squares of the two legs (a 2 + b 2 ) will equal the square of the hypotenuse (c 2 ). Note: Hypotenuse is the side of the triangle across from the right angle. The angle must be a right triangle. The length of the two sides must be known. Note: Hypotenuse is the side of the triangle across from the right angle. The angle must be a right triangle. 5
Pythagorean Theorem Step 1: Step 1: Name the legs a and b and the hypotenuse c. You are given the a = 5 and b = 7. Add these values to the formula and solve for the unknown c. Step 2: Step 2: 5 2 + 7 2 = c 2 25 + 49 = c 2 74 = c 2 74 = c 2 Hypotenuse = c 5 7

Pythagorean Theorem Step 3: Step 3: Now take the square root of both sides of the equation to solve for c. The square root of 74 is 8.6 Answer Answer c = 8.6
