GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 3 A reminder of what 3GPP is doing. 3GPP is specifying the following radio technologies: –GSM –GPRS –EDGE –W-CDMA (UTRA/UMTS) FDD mode TDD mode (high chip rate) TDD mode (low chip rate –aka TD-SCDMA) HSDPA 3GPP Air Interface Technologies

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 4 3GPP Releases 3GPP Specifications are grouped into “Releases ” –A mobile system can be constructed based on the set of all specifications which comprise a given Release –A Release differs from the previous Release by having added functionality introduced as a result of ongoing standardization work Release '99 content frozen December 1999. Release 4 content frozen March 2001. Release 5 functionality frozen March/June 2002 Release 6 functionality expected to be frozen in late 2003/early 2004

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 5 Release 5 : Main Features –IMS - IP-based Multimedia Services In two phases (Phase 1 in Release 5) IP core network (IPv6) Handling of multimedia services using SIP signalling and the bearers offered by the PS domain –HSDPA - High Speed Downlink Packet Access Opens up throughput in order of 10Mbit/s Included in ITU-R update of M.1457 What’s new since RAST 10?

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 6 –High Speed Downlink Packet Data Introduces a variable modulation scheme to allow more efficient use of the radio spectrum. It is only intended to be used on the downlink and for shared channels such as DSCH. It includes a new modulation scheme (16 QAM with Hybrid ARQ). –Support of Radio in additional bands Makes possible the use the full radio system in additional bands such as 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz, and enables the use of PCS in the US. –Base station Classification A classification scheme is introduced for Base Station in terms of certain radio parameters. Release 5 Radio Features

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 7 –IP Transport Allow the option of full IP transport within the network side of a PLMN. This is intended as a complement to IP Multimedia. Several improvements in terms of functionality of the nodes in the Access Network also included. –One typical example is the possibility to allow soft handover for common channels –Another example is the possibility to connect an RNC to multiple Core networks nodes when the Core network element cannot handle the traffic of one RNC. GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 8 –Harmonisation Process between 3GPP and 3GPP2 On the network side, significant progress has been made in harmonising the definition of IP based Multimedia Systems. On the radio side, little has been done in common because of the differences that were already existing between the two radio systems. Modulation for the equivalent of HSDPA for the CDMA 2000 system is also different. Release 5 Harmonisation (Radio)

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 9 Release 6 is expected to contain the following radio features: –Multiple Input Multiple Output antennas (MIMO) This work item concerns the possibility to improve receiver performance for HSDPA by having multiple antennas in the User Equipment. –UMTS 850 This work item enables the use of FDD and TDD based systems in new spectrum bands (of particular interest to the Americas). What’s coming next?

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 10 –Beamforming Enhancements This work item specifies Beamforming techniques using dedicated pilot symbols or S-CPICH, which have the potential to improve system capacity. These will improve the benefits obtained from using beamforming. The remote control of tilting antennas is also under consideration. –Introduction of the Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) in RAN This work item will allow better use of the radio spectrum for the support of MBMS. The intention is to enable more efficient use of the spectrum under certain conditions by changing from a point to point connection to a point to multipoint connection using common resources. –Several generic improvements for the RNS are also expected What’s coming next?

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 11 Feasibility Studies for: –Fast Cell Selection (FCS) for HS-DSCH –UTRA Wideband Distribution System –Viable deployment of UTRA in additional and diverse spectrum arrangements –Improvement of inter-frequency and inter-system measurement for 1.28 Mcps TDD –Analysis of OFDM for UTRAN enhancement –Uplink Enhancements for Dedicated Transport Channels –Analysis of higher chip rates for UTRA TDD evolution –Evolution of UTRAN Architecture –Early Mobile Handling in UTRAN These feasibility studies will determine whether or not specification work should begin. What’s coming next?

GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 12 Harmonisation Process between 3GPP and 3GPP2 –On the network side, close co-operation is envisaged for the further development of the IP based Core Network and associated services. –On the radio side, agreement has been reached to jointly study issues which are of interest for both Projects (e.g., spatial Channel modelling) and to ensure that design requirements for UE’s are harmonised where possible (e.g., the number of antennas used for MIMO). GRSC1 - OttawaSlide 21 Since RAST 10: –3GPP has completed Release 5 which brings tangible network and radio improvements – Working relationship with 3GPP2 has improved considerable leading to technical harmonisation –Working relationship with ITU-T and ITU-R has improved with alignment and streamlining of referencing procedures –Extensive project management has been introduced in 3GPP leading to more efficient delivery of specifications And for the future? –Release 6 under way which will include further innovative technology –3GPP and 3GPP2 committed to close collaboration –A lot of work still to be done….
