Hitler demanded the Sudetenland –Neville Chamberlain met with Hitler to discuss this demand –Great Britain was not prepared for war so they appeased Hitler Gave into his demands Hitler said it was all he wanted but 6 months later divided Czechoslovakia Between his allies

Great Britain and France lost hope of settling peacefully Great Britain and France prepare for war –Great Britain and France said if Hitler continued to expand they would go to war Hitler and Stalin Sign a nonaggression pact –Eliminates a Soviet attack from the East Divided Eastern Europe between the two nations

Hitler invaded Poland on Sept 1, 1939 –Great Britain, France, Poland- Allied powers Hitler used Blitzkrieg- “lighting war” –Fast concentrated air strikes –Allowed Hitler to take Poland in a month

After Hitler takes Poland war slows down –United States calls this a “phony war” –France begins to set up defense on the Maginot Line- fortification along French and German border Provided housing for troops, recreation areas, underground rail lines, concrete walls with artillery

Hitler attacks Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg –Takes less than 3 weeks Use this area to attack France

By June 10 1940 Hitler took over France –Italy declares war on France and Great Britain Hitler controlled Northern 3/5th and Southern coast –Vichy France- under General Henry Philippe Petain –Free France- Led by Charles DeGaullle Formed bases in Britain and led underground resistance

Hitler turns to Great Britain- Battle of Britain –Massive air raids on Britain- Luftwaffe –Britain responds by bombing Berlin- Royal Air Force, RAF Major losses on both sides –Germany lost more
