Determination of Topics and Tabulations for National Censuses: MALDIVES Department of National Planning

OVERVIEW First census in 1911 From 1985 onwards, census conducted every five years. Last conducted in 2006- 21 st -28 th March. Shift to ten year census – 2016

TOPICS DETERMINATION Topics are first determined within the Statistics Department based on the previous Census questionnaire Design the Census questionnaire with the topics identified with alarming issues to be addressed from Census Data user’s workshop

Data user’s workshop held to: o Discuss the data collected from previous censuses have met their requirement. o Additional requirements and issues identified o Incorporate additional topics/ questions DATA USER’S WORKSHOP

DISABILITY o For the first time Disability was identified as an important area to be covered in 2000 Census. o Unreliability in the data collected – due to sensitivity and the way questions were designed. o This was taken up at the Data user’s workshop held in 2006: o Decision taken – TO EXCLUDE o Decision taken to include disability in the next round of Census EXAMPLE

HOUSEHOLD INFORMATION o Type of residential o Number of rooms o Type of material used for roofing o Type of lightning o Electricity provider o Sanitation system o Rent o Household ownership o Waste disposal o Type of drinking water / water for cooking o Fuel used for cooking o Consumer durables TOPICS COVERED IN 2006 CENSUS
