African-American soldiers in the North Discrimination Separate regiments commanded by white officers Not allowed to rise above rank of captain Lower pay, higher mortality rate. Massachusetts 54 th Regiment First regiment of Northern blacks to fight in the Civil War. (1863). 600 men in the regiment. Key Terms Fort Pillow- Fort in Tennessee where Confederate troops killed over 200 African American prisoners and some whites. Andersonville- Worst Confederate prison located in Georgia. There was no shelter, and prisoners drank from the same stream that served as their sewer. Clara Barton- Nurse for the Union who became known as the “Angel of the battlefield” Income tax- A tax that takes a specified percentage of an individual’s income.
